I don't know about you, but there are some days I just have a hard time getting in those recommended servings of fruit and veggies. I know they're really important, but some days you just can't stomach the thought of eating another handful of spinach. I have no idea why, it's just like that some days.
For me on these days (and other days in between), I've found in easier to drink my greens and fruit. Something about chugging it down instead of chewing just sits better with me, literally. In fact, my signature green drink is the one thing that I've consistently done for my health for about two years now. I'm not even that consistent about taking daily vitamins (which I'm getting better at by the way). Now just a fair warning, I don't necessarily drink this for the taste, I exclusively do it to power down some superfoods that I know will give me a boost of energy and just feeling better all around. There are definitely some things that you can add to make it taste better, but for me, I just chug it down while standing over the sink and I'm done. All I can tell you is that I SWEAR BY THIS DRINK. I usually do it once a day, but if I feel a cold or sniffle creeping up, I'll do two or more. It's better than an energy drink, and it'll have you feeling great. As with all good things though...CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Drink it everyday. Just do it.
So here's my "recipe" for this green drink. Chug it down.
Liana's Green Drink
-handful of kale (I keep a super-sized bag in the freezer so none of it goes bad)
-one apple cut up
-one lemon, squeezed
-one tbsp of ginger
That's it. Not kidding. See why I said I don't really do it for the flavor? So let's break it down and talk about why this is a superfood drink:
Kale: it's often been referred to as the world's healthiest food, and why not? On top of being a deliciously versatile food, it is incredibly nutrient dense, and also provides a fair amount of protein. It it also supportive of our body's natural detoxification system. Not a fan of kale? Use any other cruciferous leafy green vegetable like cabbage, collard greens, or bok choy.
Apple: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Time true saying.
Lemon: I personally think the lemon helps with the bitterness of the kale, and in addition to this, a nice pump of citrus helps to keep your energy up.
Ginger: My personal favorite additive. I love ginger. As you can see in the picture, simple ground ginger is all you need, unless you prefer to grate some fresh ginger then go for it. I have a lot of stomach issues, and ginger is a simple cure all for this. It acts as an anti-nausea remedy (I used it for morning sickness), and also an anti-inflammatory. I recommend the ground ginger at the bottom of this post; it's GMO free and a whole pound for just $13.00
So there you have it! Try it for two weeks, everyday, and let me know how you feel. You won't regret doing it. And just remember, it takes 21 days to build a habit, so keep going!
Note: In the picture there are blueberries mixed with the kale...I threw those in there because they were about to go bad.
