Before I got pregnant, I was the queen of supplements that enhanced your workouts; a pre-workout pump, amino drinks, energy drinks, anything that would give me a high spurt of energy. As soon as I found out I was pregnant thought, I immediately nixed all of these things; I even weaned myself off of coffee as well. Apart from a serious caffeine withdrawal, my body adjust relatively well without all of the extra supplements. Now that I’m about three months postpartum and working out regularly, I needed something to help promote muscle growth and recovery.
After much research and a talk with my midwife, I decided to re-start my BCAA routine. BCAA’s or branched chain amino acids are nutrients that our bodies receive from protein rich foods like meats, legumes, and dairy. The term “branched chain” is just the chemical structure name of the amino acids. They help with muscle growth and can reduce the breakdown of proteins when the body is under a high exercise induced stress, like an intense interval cardio workout. In addition to all of these awesome factors, its perfectly okay to use while breastfeeding. I’m extremely cautious of what I ingest because Athena is exclusively breastfed; I’ve already done away with dairy products due to her sensitive stomach. I drink a scoop of Xtend BCAA’s everyday, even on rest and recovery days when all I do is stretch. Since this stuff is caffeine free and contains what our bodies already have, it has zero effect on our little sensitive nurslings. Score. To top it all off, this brand of BCAA’s has really cool and delicious flavors. I’ve tried all of them but my personal favorite is the mango flavored, but I’m totally biased because I like mango flavored anything. So give it a try and let me know what you think!
